Type: Residential – Design Only
Status: Client-managed build – images show pre-styling phase

🖋 Project Brief

This project centred around a unique and rewarding challenge: seamlessly marrying the charm of a 19th-century stone cottage with the bold addition of a modern, glass-fronted extension. The brief was clear — to create a cohesive interior that honoured the history of the original cottage while introducing a fresh, contemporary language that embraced the surrounding landscape.

Working closely with the clients, we developed a full interior layout that included a contemporary kitchen, open-plan dining and living space, a plant/pantry zone, utility, snug, three bathrooms, and four bedrooms (currently unfinished). The design was handled as a consult-only project, with the clients managing the build themselves.

Our holistic approach ensured that both architectural styles were tied together thoughtfully, allowing the old and new to sit in quiet conversation rather than conflict. Materiality, tone, and flow were carefully considered to ensure the interior didn’t distract from the expansive views the new extension now opened up.

While the images reflect the space pre-styling and final dressing, they capture the spatial thinking and intent behind the design. The result is a home that offers warmth, clarity, and contrast, proving that heritage and modernity can coexist beautifully when guided by purpose and empathy.

🔍 Key Focus Areas

  • Balancing old and new through tone and material
  • Design that frames — not competes with — exterior views
  • Multi-functional planning (plant pantry / snug / utility flow)
  • Open but intimate living zones within a large extension

💡 Outcome / Impact

The design created a home that feels anchored in its past but forward-looking, with a sense of ease and clarity. Even in its unfinished form, the project showcases how thoughtful design can bridge eras — offering spaces that are as emotionally grounded as they are spatially functional.
